Walmart has plans for a 12,000 square foot store right over the Oriental town line on Highway 55. It’s part of Walmart’s new experiment with what are called Walmart Express stores. They’re grocery stores, often with a pharmacy included.
It is small as Walmart stores go, but in Oriental, NC, the impact would be huge. Walmart could hurt and likely even force out of business, our local, independently owned businesses. This is not conjecture. Look across the country. It has happened time and again where the world’s biggest retailer has opened a store.
That’s what worries a lot of local residents and businesses and those who love Oriental. We are concerned about the future for our homegrown grocery store, the pharmacy that set up shop two years ago, giving Oriental its first drugstore in anyone’s memory. Other businesses could be affected, too. All of them are a part of the weave in our community’s fabric. If you’re involved with any of our local charities and non-profits, you know this. These businesses give generously to the community. They offer special service.
But if Walmart sets up shop just a few hundred feet outside of town, that will be in peril. So would that spirit that has made Oriental stand apart from the generica you find elsewhere in the country.
As everyone knows, Walmart is big. Huge, you could say. And that size can be daunting for those who oppose its plans. But people in other communities have done just that. We can, too.
If we care about the distinctive spirit and specialness of Oriental, we have no choice but to act now. It’s now.. or never. This website is based on the idea that Oriental should fight for the life of its local businesses. That means keeping Walmart from setting up here. Plain and simple. If you don’t speak up now, then forever hold your peace when you see the boarded up shops in Oriental.
At this website you will find what you can do. There’s a petition to sign and circulate that says you do not welcome Walmart near Oriental.. There’s now a second petition asking the town of Oriental to not put Walmart on the town’s water system.
You can write to Walmart, too. You can buy No Walmart t-shirts — for cost — at Pigeon Holes on Broad Street. There are several versions, the latest being the INGIAWA! shirt.
You can put a yellow yard sign in your yard or car. The work is cut out for us.

It’ll take effort, but the alternative of doing nothing comes at too high a price for Oriental.
